Periodontal Care Lake Oswego

Side by side drawings comparing a healthy tooth with another tooth suffering from periodontal disease It is important to treat gum disease early because it can lead to more serious health issues like heart problems and diabetes if left untreated. Gum disease occurs when bacteria gets under the gums and causes inflammation, pockets of pus, soreness and damage to the gum tissues.

This condition, known as gingivitis, can spread deeper into the gum tissue and eventually lead to tooth loss or other health problems in your mouth or body. It is crucial to monitor your oral health, so you can catch gum disease early on before it develops into something worse. Our dentist here at Robert H. Peterson DDS can also help diagnose and treat the condition before it advances to its late stages. Here are some of the reasons you should treat this disease as soon as possible:

Gum Disease Progresses In Stages

First, there is gingivitis. Next comes periodontitis. If it is not treated early on, gum disease can progress through these stages of increasing severity until bone loss occurs, teeth loosen and fall out, or become so damaged that they need to be extracted. The final stage of the gum infection is known as advanced periodontal disease, and by this time, it can be very difficult to treat the condition.

But even before bone loss happens, gum disease can negatively affect your oral health by causing bad breath and increased tooth sensitivity. Because gum disease is caused by bacteria in plaque accumulation on teeth and gums over time, it responds well to regular brushing and flossing. Also, having professional dental cleanings will help eliminate the bacteria causing gingivitis.

Gingivitis is Reversible

Another thing you need to know is that gingivitis is reversible, which means that if you go to the dentist when your gum disease is at this stage, it will be treated before it progresses. Although gingivitis is often thought to be irreversible, it can actually be reversed if caught early. But if it is left untreated for an extended period, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, which could require gum surgery to save your teeth from tooth loss.

Advanced gum infections are sometimes difficult to treat because they irritate and inflame gums, causing your body's natural defense, your immune system, to work harder and fight against these bacterial invaders. This eventually results in a localized infection known as periodontitis, an advanced gum infection stage.

What Health Issues Can Gum Disease Cause?

Left untreated, gum disease can lead to heart disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer's. Brushing your teeth is just as crucial for your overall health as it is for dental hygiene. If you are unsure if you have gum disease, visit the dentist. We will be able to examine your mouth and tell you whether or not treatment is necessary. The sooner gum disease is treated, the better. Be sure to speak with us right away if you notice redness or bleeding between your teeth. Untreated issues can worsen quickly, but luckily, our dentist can provide the best treatment options to stop the gum infection from progressing.
